Not adding more nuclear creates these reliability and transition off fossil fuels problems: 1) Renewables intermittency leads to a high dependency on fossil fuels for base load energy - especially during the winter. 2) Renewables intermittency requires the use of fossil fuels for load following which renewables cannot be used for. 3) During the winter there are long periods of low renewable energy production in both wind and solar at the same time. 4) Experience shows gas power plants in cold weather can have the gas supply shut off so gas generation is itself unreliable. 5) Because of transmission limitations there are upper limits of peak power production that limits growth in renewable sources. 6) The transmission limits prevent installing of enough wind and solar to supply the annual energy needed even with a national grid plan. 7) Renewables will always be short on annual energy production which means there will always be a need for base load nuclear. 8) The amount of transmission and battery storage needed to give deep renewables energy penetration is not acceptable to the public. 9) The public will not accept the number of overhead power lines needed and not accept the costs of battery storage needed in 8.
